Expectation of Travelers
We consider this a fast-paced, strenuous program. Walking and climbing stairs are required to board and disembark the jet at most airports, to get around in hotels and to participate in many excursions. Riding in four-wheel-drive vehicles on rough terrain or unpaved paths can aggravate back conditions.

All members of the trip are expected to be in good mental and physical health.

Lying 600 miles off the Pacific coast, the Galápagos Islands are the jewel of Ecuador’s extensive national park system. Naturalist Charles Darwin explored the islands for five weeks in 1835 observing wildlife and collecting specimens, and made them famous with his revolutionary book, The Origin of Species.

3Galapagos Islands Galápagos Islands, Ecuador

4Galapagos IslandsGalápagos Islands, Ecuador
See several species of lava lizard, tortoise, and finch, as well as the only penguins to live in tropical waters. From Zodiacs watch fur seals, sea lions, and colonies of blue-footed, red-footed, and Nazca boobies. Also keep watch for dolphins, whales, rays, and sea turtles.

5Easter IslandEaster Island, Chile
There’s much the world could learn from this remote island that sits more than 2,300 miles off the coast of Chile. A thousand years ago, a sophisticated society developed then disappeared, leaving stone villages, open-air sanctuaries, and giant statues called moai.

6Easter Island Easter Island, Chile
Resident archaeologists lead you to hidden troves of statuary, as well as pictographs and petroglyphs that detail the annual rituals of the birdman cult.

7International Date LineCross the International Date Line
We lose a day crossing the International Dateline and arrive in Tonga on March 20.

8TongaTonga
On the South Pacific jewel of Tonga, witness a traditional lakalaka dance, watch artisans carve canoes, stroll magnificent white-sand beaches, or explore the royal palace and tombs.

9South IslandNew Zealand’s South Island
New Zealand’s South Island is many different worlds, from cathedrals and charming English gardens in Christchurch to a center dedicated to Antarctic scientific programs to spectacular whale-watching. You may choose to board a coastal train, traveling through spectacular scenery to the Kaikoura coast. The area is world-renowned for its populations of giant sperm whales and Orca whales, dusky dolphins and rare Hector’s dolphins, and immense albatross species.

10South IslandNew Zealand’s South Island
Another option, weather permitting, is to take an early morning hot-air balloon ride over Christchurch, followed by authentic Edwardian punting on the Avon River. Also visit the International Antarctic Center, where little blue penguins can be observed. Enjoy dinner at the Tamaki Heritage Center, dedicated to promoting traditions of South Island Maoris.

11TasmaniaTasmania, Australia
Australia’s state of Tasmania is an undiscovered island gem, infused with colorful history and distinctive wildlife.

12TasmaniaTasmania, Australia
You may choose to explore the area around Hobart, including Bonorong Wildlife Park, dedicated to conserving Tasmanian devils, bandicoots, kangaroos, and other local species. Also cruise to scenic Peppermint Bay, tour a wine estate, and discover the stark prison history of Port Arthur.

13TasmaniaTasmania, Australia
Your other option is to travel to Freycinet National Park, famed for its pink granite mountains and sapphire blue Wineglass Bay. You may wish to hike, snorkel, or join a four-wheel-drive exploration of the area, and also to enjoy a “tasting tour” through local oyster farms and wineries.

14BruneiBrunei
The tiny Islamic Sultanate of Brunei sits on the northwest coast of Borneo. The first Sultan ascended the throne in 1405, and for six centuries rule has passed unbroken along the same family line. The current Sultan is one of the world’s richest individuals, and Brunei’s citizens enjoy one of the highest standards of living on Earth. We explore Brunei’s heritage in the busy markets, and at the Jame Asr’ Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque – one of the most magnificent in Asia – topped with 29 golden domes.

15BruneiBrunei
Aboard boats, we cruise past Kampong Ayer, Brunei’s water village with thousands of structures constructed on stilts and with ornate interiors. We also pass the Sultan’s residence, Istana Nurul Iman, the largest residential palace in the world with 1,788 rooms spread over more than 2 million square feet. Our cruise continues through mangrove forests to search for Borneo’s unique proboscis monkeys, who spend most of their time in the treetops.

16MadagascarMadagascar
There’s nowhere quite like Madagascar. Choose to visit remote Anjajavy with its beautiful beaches, deep-sea fishing, and water sports, where you see Coquerel’s sifaka and brown lemurs, baobab trees, unique birds, chameleons, geckos, and frogs.

17MadagascarMadagascar
A second option is to trek through the rugged eastern mountain rainforest to see Malagasy wildlife and hear the eerie sound of the Indri, the largest lemur, in Perinet Reserve.

18MadagascarMadagascar
Your third option is to explore Berenty Reserve with its profusion of lemurs in the southern spiny desert, taking guided night walks that reveal the tiny mouse lemur, as well as birds, carnivorous plants, and reptiles.

19SeychellesSeychelles
The Seychelles are the planet’s only granite islands, and their location at the crossroads of India Ocean migratory routes make them a sanctuary for fascinating birds. Mahé, the largest of the islands, boasts white-sand beaches, spectacular peaks, and rare bird species.

On Praslin Island, we visit the Vallée de Mai, a botanical wonderland with thousands of coco-de-mer palms, some more than 100 feet tall and nearly 1,000 years old. The island is also a protected sanctuary for the rare black parrot — of which only a few dozen remain in the world — and other exotic birds.

20SeychellesSeychelles
Continuing by boat to La Digue, we explore the island as the locals do, by wooden oxcart. Once a large coconut plantation, La Digue is known for its bird sanctuary, habitat of the rare black paradise flycatcher and other unique species. Set on private Sainte Anne Island, our hotel is an all-villa resort in the heart of a marine national park.

21MaltaMalta
Nearly 2,000 years before the Minoan civilization created Knossos in Crete, inhabitants of the tiny Mediterranean island of Malta constructed remarkable free-standing stone temples. Passing through many hands over the centuries, Malta was granted to the Knights of St. John, a powerful military religious order that arose from the Crusades in 1530. They held Malta until 1798, building a wealth of palaces and patrician buildings in Valletta, the capital city.

22MaltaMalta
Visit the World Heritage Sites of Hagar Qim and Tarxien, two unique megalithic architectural masterpieces on the south of the island, or explore the Auberge de Provence, former inn of the Knights of St. John and now the National Museum of Archaeology, St. John's Cathedral, and the Fortress City of M'dina. Built over 400 years ago, St. John’s is one of the most important monuments on the island, while the ancient city walls of M’dina enclose charming piazzas, churches, and palazzi.
