Mauritius is a tropical island situated in the Indian Ocean about 1,865 miles from the east coast of Africa. Often referred to as the "jewel of the Indian Ocean", Mauritius provides a wealth of experiences and sights to tempt visitors. Sheltered by surrounding coral reefs, the nearly 750 square mile island offers unspoiled beaches, tropical mountains, nature reserves, sporting and gaming activity and great fishing. Mauritius is also renowned for its varied plant and floral species. Le Prince Maurice | | 4 | Mauritius | This morning, depart on a half-day private sight seeing tour of Mauritius. Since it is a private tour the choice is yours. You may want to visit Port-Louis, the capital and main port of Mauritius. There are a number of fine French colonial buildings, especially the Government House. The Chinatown of Port-Louis is also in the old Port Louis and is fascinating as the atmosphere is really different from the neighborhood.
The Pamplemousse Gardens are among Mauritius' outstanding outdoor attractions. The gardens are known to naturalists throughout the world for their large collection of indigenous and exotic plants, including the giant Victoria Regina water lilies and the Talipot Palm. The Casela Bird Park contains more than 140 varieties amounting to 2,500 birds, but the main attraction is the Mauritian Pink Pigeon, which is one of the rarest birds in the world. Le Prince Maurice (B) | | 5 | Mauritius | Enjoy your day at leisure for independent activity. There are a number of water sports available in the area including fishing, swimming, snorkeling, diving and boating. As well as being the economic and political center, Mahe captures all the many delights of the Seychelles within its shores. The island boasts 68 beautiful beaches, the most famous of which is Beau Vallon. Each one is surrounded by sparkling crystal water offering a wealth of things to do. The capital town of Victoria has numerous Creole restaurants, art galleries, shops and a spectacular fruit and vegetable market.
If you are looking for an unspoiled tropical paradise thousands of miles from anywhere, where you can lie on palm-fringed beaches, swim in warm, crystal-clear seas and just relax - the Seychelles are the answer. Mahe, the largest and most populated of the islands, is surrounded by coral reefs and the warm, sparkling blue water is safe for swimming. A car is almost a necessity for exploring, as the roads weave through some of the most exciting coastal scenery in the world. Stroll through the Botanical Gardens in Victoria to see the coco de mer palms, orchids and giant tortoises. Excellent walks are also possible into the interior of the island where there are forests, coconut, cinnamon and vanilla plantations as well as magnificent views of the smaller islands and coastline.
